Principle and process of oxygen cutting

Oxygen cutting of steel uses a gas flame (called preheating flame) to heat the surface layer of steel to the ignition point and form an activated state, and then feeds high-purity, high-flow rate cutting oxygen so that the iron in the steel burns in the oxygen atmosphere to generate iron oxide slag while releasing a large amount of heat, with the help of these combustion heat and slag constantly heating the lower layer of steel and the leading edge of the kerf so that it also reaches the ignition point, up to the bottom of the workpiece. At the same time, the momentum of the cutting oxygen flow blows the slag away, thus forming a kerf to cut through the steel. Thus, in macro terms, oxygen cutting is a combination of the chemical process of burning iron (broadly speaking, metal) in high purity oxygen in steel and the physical process of removing slag by the flow of cutting oxygen.

The entire oxygen cutting process can be divided into four interrelated stages.

1. The metal surface at the starting point is heated to its ignition point with a preheating flame, and the combustion reaction in the cutting oxygen then begins.

2. The combustion reaction propagates to the lower layers of the metal.

3. Exclude the slag generated by the combustion reaction and cut the metal along the thickness direction.

4. Use the slag and the heat of the preheating flame to heat the upper layer of the metal at the front edge of the cut to the ignition point, so that it continues to produce combustion reactions with oxygen.

The above process is repeated continuously, and the metal cutting is carried out continuously.
